ENGLISH PROFICIENCY AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AT INTERMEDIATE LEVEL IN DISTRICT FAISALABAD

ABSTRACT: The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between English proficiency and academic achievement among the intermediate students in district Faisalabad. The study was delimited to the science students belonged to pre-medical and pre-engineering groups of tehsil Faisalabad City only. Five hundred and forty intermediate (Part-II) students from 10 different Government and private institutions at tehsil Faisalabad city were selected as sample through stratified sampling technique with due representation to male and female, rural and urban students. A self-made English Proficiency Test (EPT) comprised 50 multiple choice questions was delivered to all participants to solve with their best of knowledge. The English Proficiency Test (EPT) was marked by the researcher himself and was used to measure English proficiency of the selected students for the research work. The data were collected from Board of intermediate and secondary education, Faisalabad to examine the academic achievements of sampled students. The data were analyzed by using simple descriptive statistics through SPSS version 21. Pearson correlation (2-tailed) was used to investigate the correlation between English proficiency and academic achievement among different variables. Chi-square and t-test were applied to measure significance difference among various variables related to research hypotheses.
Results indicated that a highly significant correlation was found between English proficiency and academic achievement among intermediate students in district Faisalabad. A significant difference was found in English proficiency among male and female as well as rural and urban students also. However no significant difference was found in academic achievement among male and female students. Male students were more proficient in English proficiency but female students were better in academic achievement. An insignificant difference was found among male and female students regarding influence of English proficiency on overall academic achievement at intermediate level. Similarly, a strong significant difference was explored in academic achievement of Mathematics among male and female as well as in academic achievement of English subject among urban and rural students. Female students were found poor in Mathematics achievement whereas rural students in English achievement.
